That's a fact, in real life, hardware just wears down. Just a little realistic touch... Specially cool when new OS come to life... Perhaps we could also have incompatibilities between hard and soft... that kind of stuff.

you receive email
Quote:
Email reads
<Gateway>
Due to air-con breakdowns at the exchange some systems have suffered Overheating problems and memory failure.
Unfortunately your gateway was one of the effected and you have lost a Memory module including all data stored on it.
we are happy to replace the hard drive free of charge however the data can not be recovered and we insure all faulty drives are destroyed to prevent any data theft.

Reguards
Uplink System support
^__^ meaning you will need to rebuy your lost software of have it insured.

Or perhaps have different type of processors which are specialized in some tasks and thus weak in others? Problem is, I cannot think of that many specialized task, there could be decyphing/decrypting and password cracking and it's pretty much all I can think of.

YOU FINISH THE WHOLE GAME IN A FEW GAME MONTHS! and it's the year 2010... they have super hardware and software. Uplink does regular maintinance on your gateways.

even when uplink was made a computer couldn't deteriorate that fast!

That just adds to my point. EVERY big company makes its soft and hard in a way that it WILL deteriorate. Otherwise, once you get a basic set, you just have to upgrade it. you wouldn't ever buy a new one. That's just not profitable.
Why do you think it'll be different in the future? Don't be under the impression that the future will be any better... It'll probably be MUCH worse.

Think about it.

And don't flame.

Planned obsolescence? You just need to produce/engineer it on the cheap.

yeah but Uplink doesn't sell cheap hardware that dies in a month.

It states so.

But then it'd make sense to have 200 million credits...

I dunno. Think of the problems with the Xbox 360. It wasn't crappy hardware, it was crappy glue between the CPU and CPU fan.

Tiny cut corners can render really bad results.
