Post subject:  Dunno Where to put this But.. .Developer Idea

This is something I had thought about, as I was browsing the forums and playing last night

I realise that OnLink/Uplink has no actual multiplayer support.. for various reasons, the most important one being the security aspect..

But what about porting the game to a Web-Based MMOG? I know that there are still security issues, but they are fewer and farther between than a Multiplayer, if the servers are setup right.. And seings how the game is already written in PHP (from what I can tell) it shouldn't be TOO hard... Should it?

I am a web developer, but I'm not to fluent in PHP.. I know some basics, but thats about it...

Just a thought, flame away if need be :)

No offence ment but did you read WHY onlink was not a multiplayer game by any chance? or maybe even search the forums?

I perused through it yes... Thats why I threw out the idea to make it web based.. like I said, I didnt know how hard it would be to make the PHP code into a web application of sorts, and just threw it out. No offense taken, BTW.

It's probably the fact that Onlink is a huge mod in itself and giving it web capability would be extremely beyond feasible reach. and besides i think its also impossible by copyright law and introversion :)

The idea of Onlink is to edit the sourcecode of Uplink, not to re-write it in a totally different way.

Uplink will probably never become multiplayer. It takes a lot more than just good coding skills to do it. It takes time, money and many people with different skills. Besides, any form of multiplayer game takes lots of bandwidth to run, which would cost more money. There are lots of technical problems.

The sticky'ed post at the top of this forum says "There is no multiplayer in Onlink or Uplink."

Read it. It quotes a section of the gamebible written by Chris Delay (Introversion's lead programmer) concerning the ideas and problems with multiplayer.

I did read it.. I just wasnt to sure of the scope of the concept of "multiplayer" I apologize for bringing up a dead, and obviously stupid... question

Feel free to shoot beanbags at me now.. or whateve it is you guys do LOL

On another note, love the game, as I said before, and looking forward to OnLink

I'll kill the habit before it developes further.

It's Onlink not OnLink. :)

But yes, multiplayer means the interaction via a client between multiple players in a game situation, therefore any interaction between multiple people in the game with respect to gameplay is multiplayer.

A web-based hacking MMOG would be awesome. What it wouldn't be is Onlink.

I'm working on a web-based hacking MMOG, but it's not Onlink! :P
