Being able to squeeze that many Hz out of a single CPU slot is great, but realistically, I'm not sure a lower-end motherboard could handle it. Even in 2020.

Shouldn't that level of upgrades only be accessible after, say, getting a motherboard with a slot for a nanodrive patch chip or something? Maybe some better coolant system?

(In fact, yes, there's a new dimension to add to gateway limitations. Heat. Sort of makes sense, really.)

I'm just thinking that Cerberus should have a much wider array of motherboard/component choices - to the point of choosing between advantages. But if it's possible to just buy the Mother Of All Boards, then the game does get that much more boring.

And on the pricing point: Maybe have pricing scale according to components in the gateway? Otherwise anyone can just put God in a chip and buy it for -999999999. I know - I've done it.

Edit: What should be fun, too, is having different motherboard types. Start of with good old PCB ones:

Then eventually upgrade to the better generation (which is the fancy blue mainboard Uplink started on). These boards will be the ones capable of the cooler things, obviously ;)

Regarding heat, Miah once hinted long ago about adding heat and/or hardware degradation in as a game mechanic, so maybe we'll see that in Cerberus.

At some point, they really should get into building the next level of gateways: orbital. Ridiculously expensive to maintain, impossible to trace, and opens up a new level of missions. Oh, and no cooling required ;)

You know, thinking back on it, Uplink really, REALLY underexploited its potential as a game. It's sad to think Introversion dropped development on it. If they went back and started with everything they learned from Darwinia, it'd be a bloody incredible game...

We need to go Endgame:Singularity and build gateways in a transdimentional reality bubble.

Har har.

I actually played Singularity. Very interesting concept, nearly impossible to master (which is what I love about it).

But in all seriousness, if you can afford an orbital bounce point, why not? Satellites have insane capacity for carrying bandwidth, and in 2020, will be capable of equally insane levels of computing power.

Unless if you go the other route and hijack a satellite. Like, hack into the central control for a news broadcaster and borrow some satellite time. Could be handy ;)

Back on the sortof-topic of gateways: What about cloud computing? It's likely to form a very large part of our internet, I don't think it was predicted at the time of Uplink's creation, but how would you factor something like that into the game?

Maybe rent space or processing time on a company-operated cloud for doing complicated decryptions/cracks? Not as secure as having your own gateways, but probably a hell of a lot cheaper and easier to set up. Etcetera.

Technically speaking, the current coolant systems are just used to overclock your cpu, not necessarily to keep the CPUs from overheating.

Anyways, I think that this is a good/interesting idea.

Technically speaking, overclocking overheats your CPU, so the coolant does in fact, keep your CPU from overheating. :D

Also, parallel computing - we should be able to utilize the CPU power of all our aux gateways, instead of just one.

In another post, I mentioned cloud computing. Hijacking CPUs across the internet and stringing them together into a personal cloud that you could use to process/hack. Then you could expand your power as you went along.

actually keeping stuff within working temperatures is a serious issue in space. during the day the minuscule amount of air to pass heat onto makes for toasty components and then at night the heat differentials can cause massive structural damage.
