This is something which has been annoyingly overlooked in Uplink. It doesn't even have to be that complicated. Regardless of the port, you need to crack the same security measures and bypassers, but:

Port 21: Directly to File Server
    Port 22: Directly to Console
    Port 80: Directly to Links
    Port 88: Directly to Logs
Port 10000: Directly to Security Systems
    ... etc

Then you can add in a whole new layer of security, as well as a whole new generation of tools and methods to get around it.

This reminds me vaguely of Street Hacker, which had a similar mechanic. (The player has to connect to a machine through available ports, with various ports giving various levels of access - assuming I'm remembering this correctly. I haven't played Street Hacker in well over a year.)

That's sort of how you hack into things in the real world. Scan for available ports on a system, figure out the password, and get arrested. Probably. I'm still here, evidence that I haven't tried...

Even if I did, I suppose our local law enforcement wouldn't even bother. I sometimes doubt if they even know what an Internet is.

    "Like the toilets!"

And Al Gore invented them. We all know this. IT'S TRUE!

(PS: The ice cap is melting right now. That water around your feet isn't from the overflowing bath, it's from Armageddon)
