Wouldn't it be great, if in uplink/onlink you could create some new code on your own?
Lets see, you got all this fancy stuff which you bought with your last bankhack money of a few millions that put you in the league of Bill "fuckin'" Gates.

But still there are systems out there for that no known code exists for.
I say known because MAYBE there is some brand new research code lying hidden on some laboratory server? (hmmm, Miah?)

But back to programming. You always wanted to have a kill routine or some basic computer worm or virus or install a backdoor on the most lame machines like internic or have a automatic log erase routine that you can set up (maybe for internic or other logs) thaht you can couple with your log deleter version xxx and lets say a find option for routed through connections from a special IP (moste likely one of your gateways that you always use before hooking onto internic ... setting it up to erase all route through logs containing IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx).
What about some damn new routines or interfaces?

Well, of course you aren't totaly free in your programming and you need knowledge.
To the freedom aspect: basic code could be like LEGO parts that you add up to something usefull till a routine or virus or worm is born.

These LEGO-code-blocks dont come flying in from outer space. You need knowledge. Something you learn.
Basically similar to the knowledge in the computer game "the witcher". Books or Textfiles that you need to obtain and than read for increasing your wisdom and skill.
Some basic ones could be available for free on uplink, some others for sale. Others, -better ones- could be bought or stolen from laboratory servers and others again found on your hacking path through the web (LANS, Systems, Fileservers, Gateways, Personal Computers ...). There could also be some that you receive per e-mail by "A FRIEND" that is working on something and would like to pick your brains about it (just to put some text into the mail). The mails could come to you after you made some progress as a hacker (After first hacking the test mission and than after your first bank, your first 50, 100, 200 ... systems, withe rising reputation ...).

Hey look, that stupid hard security system raised the versions of its security software after your last recognised hack. Damn, it's abobe 5 now and the basic stuff you can buy jsut goes up to 5. How to bypass now. Wouldnt it be great to rasie your software a level or some with your programming skills that you enhanced over the past till the point where you write a master-bypasser? Or something.

Beeing off the trolley like this: what about some ghost in the machine that starts showing up as part of a story line like in "Johnny Mnemonic" or "Ghost in the shell" or all this cyber punk novels?

Security Bypassers/Disablers gradually increase in their level over time. So if you're trying to get into a system with a Level 7 Proxy, wait until a Level 7 Proxy Bypasser/Disabler is released on the Uplink ISM.
