The RPG thingy was an analogy, where single player RPGs like Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Jagged Alliance 2 are a much better and satisfying experience than games like WoW or Diablo 2.
Man, I ought to rip you a new one for that. In fact, I will.

Of those games you've listed, I've only not played JA2. "Better" and "satisfying" are subjective terms. I have enjoyed all of those games (with the exception of, of course, JA2), and all for different reasons. FO had awesome ninlinearity, pop culture references, and dark humor. BG and PT both had amazing storylines and character development (well, not BG1, but BG2/BG2ToB).

WoW and D2, on the other hand, are better and satisfying for different reasons. WoW's instances and raids are great fun if you can get together with people you enjoy playing with; D2 is similar in that aspect. D2's single-player was also very fun, and had a good storyline (though I wouldn't put it up there with any of Interplay's classics). Both Blizzard games also have very rich backstories (that are practically never explored).

I can see how Onlink can benefit from both the single player CRPG classics and the new MMORPG generation. On one hand, nonlinearity. On the other, rich backstory. On one hand, exultation of oneself (or one's avatar/in-game representation) through one's actions with the non-player world. On the other, hours of untold entertainment with and exultation amongst other players.

Don't go blowing off MMORPGs just because you think they're timesinks and grindfests.

On the topic of PvP: Does there even need to be PvP?

Well, if there must, wouldn't it be simple enough to just not allow veteran players "attack" players of lesser experience/ability/whatever?

Or you can use WOW's concept (though I doubt the concept began with WoW) of "flagging" for PvP. THose who wish to attack other players (and be attacked by other players) can "flag" themselves for PvP, and thus be allowed to attack (and be attacked by) others who are also "flagged". People who don't want to PvP don't have to flag, and are therefore safe from other players (and cannot attack others).

That's why he said "Man, I ought to rip you..." and not "Miah, I ought to rip you..."

How odd. I guess the hallucinations have started again.

Hmm, multiple topics on Multiplayer, I would post in the first one, my topic, but this one seems a bit more... popular.

Anyways, it could simply start out as a highscore list on the Onlink website. I've seen the game over screen multiple times, they DO give you a score. :)

I play with one person. A lovely character whom I hope I can get some help fine-tuning any mechanics I do in the future.

I'm a 70, and now it's damned boring. Either way, I got some information on the pitfalls of that particular MMORPG, so I suppose I could chalk it up to research if I really wanted.

(a single person is kind of a shitty reason to keep playing, heh)

Po' Miah. I've a 62 BElf Paladin (rockin' out on Shandris) which I'd play more, if my mother would get her credit card already. (This is the billionth time she's lost it and had to cancel/get a new one... or so.)
