Hmm.. When you get disavowed as an uplink agent, the game ends... But theoretically, you're not dead, you're not arrested, you're still alive, and you probably can access a computer somewhere, soooo.... How 'bout adding the ability to play the game through a PC instead of a gateway, in the event that you are disavowed? And then you could become hired by different companies to do their dirty work, or maybe start working for another freelance agency (uplink can't be the only one!).

I also thought about the fact that you can now hack PCs. If you can hack PCs, then your own PC is hackable too (theoretically). In that case, a player should also be able to buy things like monitors, proxies, firewalls, b. monitors, etc. and these would lower the chances of getting hacked by an NPC. And you guys may already have thought of this, but it certainly would be neat to have missions for hacking into a person's computer and changing or copying their emails. But then it would be possible for an NPC to do this to you as well. Think about it though: in a world of hacking, not once does your own gateway ever get hacked into. That just has to change....

Usually you're disavowed just before you're arrested, and in the world of Uplink, people that are caught for computer crimes are usually banned from ever using a computer again.

But in the real world if you are a minor when you get caught, then the ban usually lasts until your 18 or 21, but if it's a severe offense then yeah, maybe lifetime.

Depends on how old of a minor you are. If the crime is serious enough, you can be tried as an adult (and sentenced as such).

Also, Onlink takes place in an alternate universe 2010, where there's a one-world government (or at least all governments have unified their databases).

Yeah, this feels far too "happy" to me. I'll be eventually be making separate governments. And currencies with different exchange rates.

Namely the Dollar, Pound, Euro, and Yen. And credit. That'll be essentially the "gold standard."

Don't forget the Amero.
It could happen. ;)

You think a giant, world-spanning government that has everyone's medical, criminal and educational records stored in central databases is too happy?

Sounds apocalyptic to me.

Yay, futuristic dystopia?

Man... now I've got this running image in my head of Onlink taking place in a cyberpunk setting. Maybe Bladerunner.

Or Shadowrun, but that wouldn't work. (Still, a gamer can dream.)

Okay, dictionary time...

A Utopia gone sour

...
Ah, here's one more game related,

Dystopia is a cyberpunk-themed modification of the 2004 first-person shooter Half-Life 2.

I guessed that it was somehow related to utopia, I was right.

I meant Star-Trek-ish. A unified government is, ironically, the most unrealistic element of that series (in my mind).

Actually, no. That people are peaceful within it really clenches it.

@cpu5594: I was referring to the former, not the latter, definition. And you seriously didn't know what a dystopia was? I thought that was part of the vernacular...

@Miah: Actually, the unified gov't is something I can see happening. The peaceful people, not so much.

Unless they were kept down by The Man...

Who says people are peaceful? I'm sure the press is also controlled, so any riots or rebellions are quickly put down by the massive police forces and never reported on the news, making it seems as though the world is entirely peaceful.

Only, it's the entire galaxy. Or so. Possibly more. Je ne sais pas, I'm not a Star Trek buff.

Oh, I meant Onlink, not Start Trek.
