as a matter of fact i noticed that neither onlink nor the original uplink introduced a piece of reality in the game ...

it not only that you press that button or open that program to like hacking .. it's much more than that ..

i think that we need more hand working .. more code typing ..

when i watch a movie talking about hackers .. i always see that they are hacking through a blach screen covered with white lines ...

it's the original feeling of hacking that we want ..

if any one of you saw the game called (street hacker) .. i really liked this game for two reasons :

1- the Terminal : where you input basic hand-typed codes and where most hacking take place .. that's what i meant

2- the reality : they are using basic hacking techniques in the game and the software do the minimum work .. they are using real OS Names As : Fedora - DuraDigit - mandrick ...

that's really what gives you the feling of hacking !

You want change? Rewrite the game yourself.

actually i didn't write this topic for a moderator to mock at me ...

because you can't ask for our opinions about the game and what we like to see in it then mock at these opinions ...

i wasn't to open this topic if i didn't want this mod to be better ...

thank's

I wasn't mocking you, I was being serious - if it was command-line only it would be easy to write ;)

Onlink and Uplink are both 'Hollywood Hacking' - and completely different from real hacking. You can't compare the two, it's like apples and oranges.

of course i didn't mean to change the game upside down and only use command lines .. i just meant ..

what's the joy in opening (for example) firewall bypasser to bypass a firewall ? .. couple of buttons to be pressed and that's all ?

you need to feel the challenge .. because the game run under only one concept : ( as long as you have the tool .. you can hack every thing)
with no consideration of the player's intelligence or ideas ..

what i mean that part of the game should simulate the real hacking ...

it is as if the game created a new world to be hacked in a completely different way other than that we know .. get what i mean ?

(sorry for getting you wrong  )

Pfft. That's part of the reason the entire PC interface is blank.

I dont like the lack of reality in the game either, but what you must remember is that it is a game, and as that needs to appeal to the larger audience(which means that its gotta be hollywooded)
If you want realism and the thrill learn to hack and take part in wargames(which most of the time) are completely legal. Be aware in saying this I am in noway condoning illegal activity.

Games are some part of escaping reality .... if games were exactly like reality why would we play them?

I know i wouldn't play games that were exactly like modern days .....

I have to agree. There are plenty of sites out there that let you put your box up against other peoples. There is a time frame, it's real hacking, and it's legal. To make a simulation of this seems kinda pointless when you can do it for real.... but then, i never could see the point in tennis games for the same reason so I could be wrong.

My biggest probelm with making Onlink erm, "real" is having it turn from a legit game into a tutorial. I've done some stuff to make it sightly more real (use of md5'd passwords, actual backups, etc) but there is a limit before it treads into a gray area.

If you guys have ideas of what to add, I will consider it.

Eh?

Working on that... there should even be missions for /rec/ (such as adding a user, changing the admin password, et al.)

And pub. Haven't decided what to put there, however. I have, in my notes:

/dev
/ebs
/etc
/ftp
/pop
/pub
/rec
/sec
/tmp
/www

But to include all of these should take some time.

/dev <--- Devolpment Software? Like on a File server?
/ebs <--- What is this?
/etc <--- JUnk folder?
/ftp <--- If this is true wouldnt this be like a file server?
/pop <--- Email server?
/pub <--- Gonna keep it like the file server?
/rec <--- Recycle Bin?
/sec <--- Security Right?
/tmp <--- TMP like the TMP folder on your HD where it keeps files before deleting or the recently used?
/www <--- Webpage? So you can take down a webserver?

Just curious on them woudl like some kinda clarifications.
