So, my parents were having the second half of our apartment painted, and they needed somewhere to dump the stuff from their room, including and LP player together with its humongous amplifiers. Well, I set it up in my room and will never give it back!

Long story short: sweet Shine on you Crazy Diamond all night long... :classy:

Meh. Audio quality > size.

Implying that old=bad quality, huh? Well, I find the sound to be of much better quality then any mp3 files I have. Maybe because, back then, songs were recorded with the whole band instead of instrument per instrument, and they did not edit the song to remove every single bit of noise. Digital music sounds too artificial to me. Also, this baby has crystal clear sound!

Yeah, LPs that aren't scratched are generally regarded as having really good sound quality, all warm n' such.
Quite a few independent groups still put out records, even.

Well, duh. MP3 is a lossy format.

How is this in any way a good thing, or indicative of sound quality? Noise is a bad thing. You want it removed, so that the recording is closer to what it would've sound like IRL.

I'll believe it when I hear it.

Nope, IRL there IS noise. That's the thing.

No, when I say "closer to [...] IRL" I mean "as Goddamned pure audio as possible."

Noise is never a good thing because that means you've lost data somewhere.

Meh, we could go on forever - it has come down to a matter of opinion. I prefer the audio as close to reality as possible, you prefer it as close to perfection as possible. I'm fucked, everything modern is made for you and not for me! :classy:

Most people prefer things as close to perfection as possible. It's much easier to add noise than it is to take it away.

Wouldn't noise be awesome for hard drives? Random bits misplaced and overwritten... You'd enjoy it, I'm sure.

Making a point, really. Noise is _bad_.

That's not even a similar situation.
Random noise on a hard drive renders the data unusable. Random noise in sound, you can still listen to it. And some people (including very musically inclined people) enjoy the pops and scratches that come from a record, records are almost universally described as sounding "warmer."
So stop telling him he's wrong, because he's not.

It'd be awesome for wiping data, yanno.
