My laptop is getting pretty old now, and I think it's about time to get a new one. However, we're a bit strapped for cash so I am planning on buying used from Ebay or maybe a netbook. So, I need some amateur appraising done. :P

Model: HP Pavilion zv6223cl
Specs:
  • AMD Athlon 64 2GHz (Single-core)
    1.25GB RAM
    ATI XPress 200M IGP
15.4" Widescreen Glossy Display (1280x800 resolution)
Now, for the cons:
- The outer shell of the screen hinges on the back on the laptop are popped open, I'm sure they could be popped back, but I didn't want to take the chance. It still opens and closes fine.
- The battery cannot hold a charge, the laptop powers off as soon as you unplug it.

If I decide on selling it on Ebay, I will put up the option to leave Ubuntu on there or reinstall XP. Of course I will include the OEM XP disks that came with it.
My older sister also received one the same Christmas I did, but it is now used by my Mom for bills and working from home when not in the office. She needs screen space, and the battery is slowly dying on hers as well. If we sell both, what do you recommend we buy? (I was thinking a used Macbook on Ebay ;-) )

On a side note, I notice that Macbooks have unusually high resolutions for their displays (i.e. 1280x800 on a 13.6"). Should I then, get the same screen space as my 15.4" at 1280x800, just with everything a bit smaller?

I'd say it's worth more than that, you scoundrel.

I'd say that the lack of Windows makes it worth tons more. :P

Windows isn't that bad, you zealot.

I generally dislike Windows for a lot of design decisions, but I don't think it makes sense to thrash it with the fervor that Linux geeks typically do.

I know, I know. I actually like Windows 7 a lot. I was planning on installing Ubuntu and dual booting but I am not quite sure yet.

I've been tri-booting, because I'm crazy.

I've currently got these on my Mac:
  • Mac OS X 10.5.8 (developer preview L22)
  • Gentoo Linux (kernel v2.6.31-rc1-tip-00922-g7c6b84e)
  • Windows 7 RC1
Windows 7 RC1 has surprised me with how good it actually is. Even Internet Explorer 8 has some neat new features. I still won't use IE, but it's got some stuff that other browsers need. For instance, the "InPrivate Filtering" (not to be confused with the InPrivate Browsing, i.e. "porn mode"). Read up on it here (scroll down past the InPrivate Browsing section): http://www.microsoft.com/windows/intern ... #inprivate

I am getting a 404 on your madsci PNG.

Yup, you are crazy. Using development builds of pretty much every flavor. (Windows 7 RC1 is the exception )

What exactly do you need all three for? Like from my perspective and usage, i'd use Windows for games (But I don't see you as a big gamer) maybe Mac for sound and graphics if I didn't have a PC up to it, and Linux for...well I don't know. I know some people use them as seedboxes or to code on I guess.

Heh, I was condensing all our images into the /images/ folder at the time, and forgot to update the URL. Fixed.

So do you have all three for the sole purpose of having an Onlink build for each OS?

That's strange, because I do. Although, to be honest, I have to call into the question the taste of anyone that prefers Oblivion. ;)
