No. The MacBook was cannibalised from two other MacBooks into one working MacBook. One of them had a broken network interface, that other a broken screen.

The one with the broken network interface wasn't mine. I couldn't keep it.

I see, but why does the server cost so much?

I'll have to ask Tycho. He wrote the proposal.

He takes care of the source control service for me, among other things (like curbing my insanity).

The server should ideally have multiple disks (set up with a ZFS RAID so we have multiple backup copies), have a powerful processor and lots of RAM so that git works optimally, etc.

I maybe can help out with your problem related to the server.

I'm not sure at all, what kind of server you need. Does it have to be a Windows Server or can it be a Linux based server?

I have an unused Linux Server and I could help you out with this, if possible and interested.

Greetz,

Maxunit

PS: I just got back to Uplink, installed Patch 1.6 and newest Onlink and it ownz :)

We prefer Linux, actually. But that's somewhat beside the point. We need a new set of hardware to run our source code hosting, and it cannot be hosted by a third party (for legal reasons).

Speaking of which, I'm currently using my old laptop as a source control server. It's certainly not ideal, because it's one less machine that I can test Onlink code on.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the info :) No problem, if legal reasons and other stuff is involved with this.

Then I hope, that you get enough donations for a new source code server. I would donate, but I'm out of money -.-.

Just an idea is it possible for some of us to donate hardware instead of money? Tycho should post the list of hardware he needs so instead of building a completely new machine you guys could use some unused hardware sitting around.

But you can't use a private GitHub account?
I suppose why you wouldn't, they often have blackouts. I also understand why you might think paying tons for one machine is better than paying a monthly rate.

EDIT: Why is BBCode off in the News board?

We can't use GitHub for hosting legally because we don't have full rights to the code.

And the BBCode is fixed. Sorry about that. Please PM me if there are other forums with that issue.

Well that makes sense, almost forgot that Onlink was a mod for Uplink for a moment.

After thinking about it, I came to a realization: I can actually solicit help from people without needing them to have the DevCD to even witness the code. Because of this, I am opening an opportunity for anyone with a decent C/C++ experience to assist.
I'd like to humbly offer my help. I have a fair amount of C++ experience (and am looking at doing a formal qualification in it.) I'm also hoping to get the Uplink Dev CD, but at £30, it may be a while as things are tight.

PM me if you want me to help?

Cheers

Is the Onlink project still going? If so I would like to donate..
But I sincerely think you should just get a PC and save yourself a fortune, macs are shit (well atleast they are for the amount of money you piss away on them) and if you really like the OS that much run a Mac OS on VMWare or something. If you are on hard times then download pir@te software until more donations come through.. I buy all my stuff nowadays but there have been times when I had to scrape by doing that.
Maybe it sounds bad but if its the difference between dead onlink and alive onlink its a good cause!
