| Post subject: | Computer Mouse lag associated to Internet Activity... Help? |
It's happened on Windows 7 and Xp, I reinstalled Windows 7 and that didn't help, so I thought it was just a Windows 7 problem, and wiped my hard drive and installed an nLited Windows XP (I made sure not to remove anything important.) Anyways, whenever I load a relatively large webpage or download a file larger than a few Megabytes, my computer starts to lag and my mouse slows down to turtle speeds. I'm on a wired PS/2 mouse right now, so I don't know if the occasional hiccups with this mouse is from this problem or because the mouse is old. (I just tried Hulu.com, and I didn't get the lag, so I'm guessing any problems is because the mouse is so old) But yeah, the problem occurs with my Wireless Laser Mouse (USB) and a Wireless Optical Mouse, also USB. At one point I had linux installed, but I'm just so use to Windows' clean UI I can't stand the bulky KDE. Help, anyone? |

It has nothing to do with your mouse or your internet connection. It's your processor and/or RAM. The computer either can't process the image fast enough or it can't put it into RAM fast enough. Either way it's a hardware problem and has nothing to do with software, mouse, or connection. If anything, your connection is too fast. |

So, maybe my RAM is going bad? I seriously have not had any problems like this before, and right now the PS/2 mouse is working fine. I'm thinking of upgrading to the new AMD platform later this year, along with some more memory. So maybe I should start saving up my allowance. |

So I'm guessing you agree that it's a hardware issue. Dang. |

I didn't say that, but it's certainly plausible. Can you run memtest86+?
Dang. |

Onboard network card or a separate one? if It's onboard it might be poorly designed and task the CPU too much, try testing a separate one. |

It's an ECS board, and I'm not sure if they are such great quality. I've tried both onboard ethernet ports, one is a Realtek 10/100 and the other is an Agere 10/100/1000. I'll have to find a card up in the attic. As far as the memtest goes, I let it run while I was at school (almost 8 hours is shown in the Memtest screen. So far: Code: Current Pass % | Passes so far | Errors
72 % 12 0

No one figured this out? Check your bios, be sure you are using the bios mapping for mouse and keyboard, if you do that it won't slow down. If it relies on the OS it will slow down when the system slows down. I know this because I had a similar problem at one point, but in that case I changed it TO OS, because I was convinced at the time that the OS could handle it better, now I know differently. |

Thanks for the advice, I'll check it out later tonight.

Wow, I had gotten so use to the old PS/2 mouse I put off checking this out.I know this because I had a similar problem at one point, but in that case I changed it TO OS, because I was convinced at the time that the OS could handle it better, now I know differently. I have two words for you Chase: THANK YOU! I just selected 'Load Performance Defaults', fine-tuned some of the settings and rebooted. The problem seems to have disappeared. I know that I would have eventually loaded the defaults myself, but now I can use my the wonderful scroll wheel and laser precision technology that even the old geezers are using. EDIT: Hmm, it seems to have slowly reappeared... :\ However it's not as bad as before. I think something is going bad. |

So nobody knows what the problem is? If I don't get an answer, I'm going to suspect it's a hardware issue. |

Oh, I thought I posted something, but it didn't take. Try increasing the number of reports the mouse sends to the OS, via your control panel (iirc hardware tab or driver settings for it), this may not be available if you use custom software to manage your mouse (like Logitech SetPoint), but those should have a similar setting you can change (in SetPoint for my G5 its in advanced game settings at the bottom). you can also click increase pointer precision inside the windows options. The more reports it sends the more CPU time is dedicated to the mouse and less lag it gets, the amount of slowdown your system gets form this is fairly minimal (hard to notice). |
