Hi all,

Our source control server is on the verge of death. It's a Sony Vaio PCG-TR1A that's got quite a few years on it now. It has started having serious issues.

Long story short, I had to replace the hard drive and battery on it, and it's now showing identical symptoms to what it was doing before I replaced them. The hard drive sporadically makes a loud whine, and has read/write errors occasionally.

Thankfully, our source repositories are stored on an external hard drive, so all we need to replace is the machine hosting it. Our hardware requirements are low, but we still need something that's going to be reliable and will hopefully last a few years.

We've currently got our eyes set on an iMac G4, which sells for $499. I am personally throwing $60 into the pot, so we need $439 more. Miah and I are barely making ends meet as far as finances go, so we yet again need to ask the community for financial support. Any contributions are welcome.

Thank you all for your support. You need to know that this project would not be still going on without you!

Actually, I was looking at a Mac Mini. Small, configurable, and easily removed in the event of natural disaster and/or cataclysm.

Good thing it's not going to be anywhere near me.

D: Curses, and here I am, without a job or anyone I can easily mooch off of.

I wish I could put something in the donation pot, but all I have now really is air. Sorry.

All my spare hardware has been gotten snatched up by the greedy/desperate. I had a nice server box too I could of shipped over. It was pretty much all new before being parted, sorry guys. *le sigh* I can supply older crap, but kind of pointless since your looking at a mac.

I recently looked up hardware and from what I have seen you can produce a complete and current(ish) system on the cheap right now if your not to worried about top of the line preformance. Say about $200 to $300, assuming you get a copy of openSUSE or one of the other server distro's floating about (and nothing that will $$ cost you).

I can hopefully donate something after Christmas. I was gonna donate something within the last few weeks but my computer went major bye-bye, so that's kinda the priority right now.

Sorry guys, moneywise it doesn't look green here either.
I spent some on a new Computer in sommer and am still in the red.

I have some spare parts from my old Computer (Geforce 2 MX 32 MB and a Thunderbird 1000 with an ASUS Mainboard). I thought of turning it into a server but I guess you get better stuff for that purpous nowadays.

So if you want that, I can ship that or I whire just the cost of shipment directly if you are looking for lolly.
But not before next year.
Would the shipment be to USA or Europe? (don't wanna nail you down, but I thought of Miah as beeing British or an Ausi) :o)

PS: as a system for fileserver I would use Ubuntu Linux and for safety maybe set up a Raid 5 (if you store big files)?

I don't/can't yet have a job, so I can't contribute anything money-wise. I would send you a g4 cube to help, but the DVA slot *might* be broken.

However, I did find this iMac with 256MB more ram at 40$ less: http://www.powermax.com/parts/show/c-u65136

So in a way, It's like I'm giving you 40$. And 256MB of RAM.

The main reason I like the iMac G4 is that it's got a monitor built in. It'd be a good replacement for a laptop.

Second of all, having a PowerPC machine around would be handy for secondary reasons. It could not only act as our source control machine but as a PowerPC Mac app testing ground. We're trying to maximize the possible usage and cost-effectiveness.

Also...

NEWS FLASH

We did manage to find a cheap iMac G4 locally that we're going to buy tomorrow if it's in satisfactory condition. Miah's flying over here to visit for two weeks starting tomorrow, and as soon as I pick him up from the airport, we're heading over to check out this iMac. So hopefully we won't need donations if all goes according to plan.

Isn't it a bad thing to have Miah around computers? :P

Yeah. Shit, didn't consider that. I wish I'd bought that copper mesh to EMP-protect my computers.

You're more worried about the computer than what will happen when Steven & Miah are in the same place?

Yes, because I value computers more than I do the general population. :D

Good, if you've already found a cheap replacement then I won't have to look through my already dwindling coffers.

CRISIS AVERTED!

We now have an iMac G4, and we're setting it up for source control. :)
