Hy guys. I have another quesion.

My internet provider has sc**** me up. I was paying 1mbit and only had 120kbit (my neighborhood dosent have optical cabels for the phone lines)! It is a DSL. Now im thinking of going to a cable internet provider who can offer me a 10mbit internet for the same price.

Now my question is wich is better, DSL or CABLE :?:

Companies tend to sell something as cable, when it's actually DSL. Be careful here.

The big thing about DSL to remember is that it's a party line. Wiki this if you don't know what I'm talking about, but in short, there's typically a lot of overselling. Let's say that your block has 20 houses, and each house has a 10 Mbit plan. The line can only support 100MBit at any given time, so therefore, the maximum possible speed that it would require, 200Mbit, would not be realized.

You probably think this means that if everyone was downloading, it would be at 5Mbit to even it out. You would be wrong.

DSL uses a dodgy first-come-first-serve thing. And by "first" I don't mean "time."

Short of the long is, the further you are away from the cable mainline, or the distributor, the more screwed you're going to be. And by closer, I mean exactly that.

I have this goon neighbour. He's just next door. But when he comes home, I can really tell, because my bandwidth just TANKS. One house with a high allotment can mean the difference between blindingly fast to a snail's pace.

More later.

Don´t know realy. By the way:

I called my isp wich sc***** me. The guy sead they could replace my modem. He called the next day and they sead you have 1mbit. HELO!!! THEN WHY AM I HAVING THE SNAILNET?

He sead 100kbit = 1mbit

Isn´t it like this?

1000kbit = 1mbit
10000kbit = 10mbit

Maybe he said you had 1mbit, not that 100kbit == 1mbit.

Remember this:

1 Mbps == 125 kBps

The capitalization of the B makes all the difference. Remember, 8 bit to a Byte. Make sure you're reading it right. Do an external test if you're not certain.

Did the speed test a while ago aand the test went to 1024 kbit download. No problem here. Tried to play rainbow six vegas 2 and i could play with 4 players only! (i made the server)

The connection for 4 players in a server is 119 kbit.

Also there is nothing wrong with the game, i tried multiple games and programs. I used them i a windowed mod and wached the speed monitor in my vista sidebar.

Here are my results:

I already know mine sucks since I live in almost the literal middle of nowhere. But its better then everyone else within about 5 miles of here. I was able to sign up due to an error in thier site which I exploited (during thier acquisition of att), and then they had to install hardware at the main area's phone junction just to get me internet I saw them there, and then they told me they couldn't actually get me internet, but apparently higher ups yelled at them and made them do it anyway. I am sure it cost more then my installation fee. I was lucky I even caught that error, otherwise I would still be on dial-up. (which would really suck)

Its unfortunate because I expect wireless and broadband at peoples houses when I visit, and am surprised when there isn't any... and then think.. oooh right.

I have my 360 running and signed into Live at the mo', so that may or may not have affected my results.
