I've always wondered why a person is required to be 35 in order to run for the office of President.

Any ideas?

Because back when the Constitution was written, it was agreed that anyone running should have a good amount of life experience.

So they said 35. Why 35? Well, let's just say that life expectancies weren't exactly phenomenal...

Are you of the opinion that the age should be changed? If so, which direction do you think?

The way I see it, if you have an opinion then you are qualified to become President.

Well thank God you weren't involved with writing the Constitution then.

I see his point. If a person has an opinion on how to run the Country, the people should be allowed to vote him in.

I dunno. Even though it wasn't an issue back when the Constitution was written, it would pale me to think of a jumpy eighteen year old with the little red button...

Still, if a pale jumpy 18 year old is who the people decide should lead, so be it.

The thing you have to learn is, the older you get, the more you fear and loathe those who are younger than you. The Constitution was written by a bunch of grumpy old men, that's why they said 35.
And they were gonna say 45, but Charles Pickney was only 30 so he got them to change it. TRUE FACT.

That's okay, because we fearsome young folk (with our ungodly music) would be the ones to win an age-est battle if it ever became physical.

After all, the hailing cry of society being on the decline due to the actions of the young have been there since public record ever dictated. It's easy to forget how one was as a kid, which strikes me as odd. I remember stuff back from when I was three, and my mother can too. Meanwhile, my father probably can't recall anything from before he was 20.

People are weird.

Basically, I think we can all agree that one would need to be at least 18 for any elected position. Working from that point, the constitution was written to protect the government as well as the people, an 18 year old could thus have no experience in politics and would not "know the ropes" so to speak. The reason people tend to serve as senators congressman or very prominent generals before they become president is that it gives them the experience and connections needed to run a country. So an idealogical eighteen year old with an opinion could find himself far in over his head, unable to fulfill his executive duties, and completely unable to deal with foreign powers. This idealogical leader would have to surround himself and completely entrust a series of older advisors who would pull the strings. In reality the age limit actually protects us from a kind of non-elected oligarchy.

The way I see it, the idea of a President, or Prime Minister, or any other leader in a Democracy, is someone who the people decide they want to lead them. So if the people want a 12 year old to lead them, that's the people's choice.

I'm not saying it's a good idea, of course.

I'm not saying send a 6 year old up there because he thinks that the world would be better if the sky was pink instead of blue. I'm just saying that I think the age requirement is kind of high, and if you are an American citizen, (and possibly 18 or older, haven't decided whether I'd like that or not ;) ) then you should be allowed to become President.

Doesn't really matter - you'd still need money to get into the running. Like, a lot. Something on the order of a few hundred grand.

By the way, the USA isn't a democracy. It's a democratic republic, which means we the people vote for the people who will vote for the person who will lead and/or represent the nation on the global stage. And, as it turs out, the votes cast by we the people don't really matter. Yay for the electoral college.

That's what I've been telling people for a LONG time.

I mean you understand its a winner takes all system to protect the rights of our smaller states, and ensure that every state gets campaigned in. Your vote does matter, as state low dictates that the members of the electoral college must vote whichever direction the popular vote went. Civics 101 brosky.
