Post subject:  Trouble installing Ubuntu/Debian
I'm trying to install Ubuntu, but I get the BusyBox prompt. Using "use_all_ide" or "acpi=off no acpi" boot options I apparently get past the BusyBox and get up to a point where it links my SATA drive, then unlinks. After a few retries it moves on the USB devices, the last thing that starts up is my USB keyboard, and that is where I am at right now.
Basically the same thing happens when using my Debian net install disk. I can install either inside a VirtualBox machine rather easily.

I just want to use linux, that's all. Nothing more. Trying to get away from Windows. But if this is how linux wants to act, I guess Windows is the way to go.

P.S. Numerous others have this busybox/initramfs prompt problem and an extremely few number have actually succeeded to getting to the install screen. I tried one solution however it did not work.

Yup, it's a double post, but I have something interesting to share.

This time I installed 7.10 first, it ran great, then proceeded updating to 8.04 hardy. BusyBox came up again. This was a few hours ago. After some dinner and giving my brain a rest, I found a Ubuntu bug report on launchpad referring to kernel updates that caused the BusyBox prompt. Sure enough, when I selected 2.6.22 from GRUB instead of 2.6.24, Hardy came up fine, now I'm getting everything configured and reporting to you from inside linux right now. :P
Who knows, maybe I might make linux my mainstream desktop.

So yeah, if you install Hardy and get BusyBox, it's probably 2.6.24 causing it.

If you search for busybox 8.04 install on the ubuntu forums, you will find numerous questions, and very few answers. I was asking here to see if any Ubuntu users *cough*ChaosR*cough* knew what the problem was.

Anyways, I am installing kde onto it, hopefully that will improve the draw rate. I read on the ubuntu forums that there is a bug or something in the new Ubuntu themes that cause gtk widgets to be drawn inefficiently. Anyways, installing kde should fix it.

In other news, how's the Linux build of Onlink coming? :P

Onlink compiles and runs on Mac, Linux, and Windows just fine (32 and 64-bit versions of each, too).

We haven't done a release on Linux largely because of a scarcity of Linux boxes at our disposal. I now have 1 Linux, 1 Mac, and 1 Windows box, so I can now do builds for all three platforms.

I am not sure of the status of Onlink Mac. Miah needs to give me an update on whether or not the release would be allowed or not.

If there are multiple people here that are interested in Onlink for Linux, I'd be more than happy to build a Linux version for our next release.

I would like a linux build, but I'm giving up on Ubuntu for now. ATI and Linux aren't friends. I'll wait until I get an nvidia pc--wait, my old desktop uses nvidia, cool. :D

It might be awhile before I get that machine up, but anyways, I'd like to see a linux machine.

My ATI Radeon Mobility x1600 works fine on Linux. So far, I've used Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Debian, Gentoo, and a few others with success. I think you jumped to the conclusion that ATI and Linux aren't friends a bit quickly.

I use a 2600 xt, the proprietary driver Ubuntu provides off the bat does not work, and when I installed catalyst 8.5 the colors went crazy until I could not operate the computer.

Try installing the newest drivers, my linux on my desktop runs perfect. Got an ATI X1950pro

Catalyst 8.5 are the newest.

EDIT: I've been proven wrong, 8.6 was released. I should really check these things more often. :P

If need be I have several linux boxes so i can run builds for you.

All but 1 running ubuntu, the final one runs backtrack ;)

If you need other distros tested let me know I can chop and change quite easily.
