I have to announce an unfortunate happening. Miah's computer's hard drive is toast. He was actually working on Onlink at the time it happened, too. And he'd be the one posting this message, except he's currently without a working computer and has no access to any other machines at the moment. He needs a new one, and both he and I lack the money to purchase one. We're estimating this will cost us about $200, so we're asking for financial assistance from you folks. Please donate if you're able. Thank you for your support! |

I don't suppose there's been data recovery attemps? If not i have a few different programs and options i can provide, of course it may not be an option depending on the damage, but it didn't figure it would hurt to throw it out there. |

Man, this stinks. And right after another computer mishap? Darn. I'll see what I can do about donating. UPDATE: Okay, I randomly donated $5. Sorry it can't be more, I've recently been on tight money lately (New computer, $105 donation to Children's Research Hospital, Spore, etc.). |

I have an old harddrive now that I am able to hobble along in. It's hardly a setup that I can use for Onlink (40 GB HDD), but at least I am able to do those things that I must before finals. At least there's that. Frankly, I'm simply relieved that it's the harddrive and not, say, the motherboard again. About a week before my old computer was stolen, a transistor on the board literally blew in half. I actually took apart an old iBook G3 (which also had a motherboard failure that I could never pin down) to unsolder a transistor from and soldered it onto the board of Locutus. It was a miracle it worked. Either way, I don't have a warranty on the dead drive save for a 30-day return policy. I'm going to buy an extended warranty this time because frankly, this is getting repetitive and annoying. It would be different if I had dropped my lappy, but the thing died while I was sitting on the couch. Sadly, this doesn't appear to be a partition failure, but rather a hardware failure, as the drive makes thrashing noises, impling that the read pin broke somehow. I'll keep you posted if I can save anything. |

Get a high capacity drive and some blank dvd-rs then throw your old drive in the freezer, leave it there for an hour then clone the hell out of it, you can buy several hours of time with it by freezing it, it shrinks all the moving parts and just works magic its more of a data saving activity than a repair though. |

I'll try that. Can't hurt at this point. It's worth noting that the Onlink source is certainly safe. We have it at three locations for reasons like this. The only problem is that my emergency reserve harddrive is a quarter the size of the one that broke. At 50GB, it's not a usable environment. I'm trying the rustle up the funds for a new drive right now. |

Be certain to put the drive into a bag and remove the air. Moisture will nuke it, obviously.

Miah might I ask, did you do something to deeply offend God, or luck when you were young? Perhaps run a marathon under a host of ladders or bowl using mirrors as the lane? |

I just spoke with Miah and it seems he's got enough money to get a new hard drive (this time, with a 3 year warranty). It'd be ideal if we could still keep an emergency fund for these kinds of events, though, so if you feel compelled to help us in advance, we won't stop you.

2 year. And I got it just in time for my router to start playing games with me. It doesn't want to load any object (my system updates included) to more than 300kb. Just stops doing anything after that. Groan. I'm working on it. |

Hello Have you thought about an Backup battery (UPS)? a few years back, i used to RMA between 1 and 4 disk per month , a few cards and system voard every 6 month. (had bad power for my computers) Since my Backup battery powering all my PC, i no longer have device that dies on me. i am rock solid stable. Regards. Hope it gives you a bit of insight |
