Hahaha, funny thing, we didn't get an HD DVD player, instead, my parents misread the box and bought an upscale to HD DVD player. So basically, its a normal DVD player, which cheats to look prettier. :P

Eh, it still looks great though. :D

Well, my dad got a Blu-Ray. He'll regret it the rest of his life when HD-DVD becomes the standard.
Uh-Oh I hope you followed in your father's footsteps and got a Blu-Ray as well.

Don’t be so quick to cheer a victory by the evil axis of Sony-Apple-Disney. This is not a victory for the consumer, but rather a victory for the marketing machines of these amoral corporations. Now that there will be no competition for the Blu-Ray format, you can bet that the prices of Blu-Ray DVDs and Blu-Ray players will stay at the unreasonably high levels they are currently at.

As for HD-DVD players, I am still looking forward to getting many years of use from them, playing both the HD-DVD disks that are already on the market, as well as my library of regular DVDs that it does a great job of “up-converting” to the higher resolutions. Yes, I suppose at some point I will have to break down and buy a Blu-Ray machine, but you can bet your bottom dollar that it won’t be a Sony, and that I won’t get it at Best-Buy or Wal-Mart.

How happy are you going to be when you have to upgrade that expensive Blu-Ray player next year with an even more expensive model? Just remember though, that Sony really loves you (Ha).

I'm very surprised by this victory, given past format wars.

So first we had the war of VHS versus Betamax. The former format was named with an acronym, and was marketed; Betamax had a name, and was technically a better format, and was defeated.

Since then we've also had USB and FireWire.

This is clearly a victory for the consumer, competition is normally good for the consumer, however in this case it is not. The slightly better off than average Joe can't afford both a Blu-Ray an HD-DVD player. He can afford one, perhaps he'll get a discount if he buys it with his nice new HDTV. Now how we'll he feel if he bought an HD-DVD player and suddenly there's no new movies coming out for it?

Anyway I have a PS3 so wahoo!

It doesn't really matter. In 3 years we'll have something new and better anyway. Honestly I'm surprised the war didn't last long enough for both of them to get deposed by something new.

I'm just glad that the 360 wasn't designed to run solely on HD-DVDs. Y'know all those Blu-Ray-only movies?

I can get many of them in high def via my 360, thanks to XBL. :D
