Lately I've been getting rather annoyed at my heat sink and fan that came with my CPU. I'm using an ASUS m/b with the smart Q-Fan function enabled. Whenever my cpu gets to 30 degrees, Q-Fan kicks in and speeds up the CPU fan. The problem is, that its way too loud. In 'normal' house conditions I can hear by cpu fan from the kitchen, through the living room. And it's bloody annoying doing stuff at 1am with the rest of the house trying to sleep.

Normally the fan runs at just over 1000 rpm - next to no noise. When it starts to heat up it jumps to 2500 rpm usually, and when I start taxing the cpu (i.e. loading windows with all my programs or playing a game) it jumps to ~4500 rpm. I've tried lowering the power output to the fan to 4V (from 5) but the fan continuously powers up and down - not good. A secondary issue is that when the fan is revved up to 4500 rpm, it won't slow down until I reboot the machine. The cpu can sit on 17*C and the fan will run at 4500rpm for days.

Is there anything I can do to stop it making such a huge racket or do I have to go out and by a different heatsink/fan kit (I don't want to go water cooling).

If I'm correct there is either on your motherboard/fan a jumper you can change, or you can change the settings in the bios. I would recommend buying a new one, decent fans cost almost nothing. You can get a really nice one for just $20.

I'm in auzzie land, there is a couple that I'm looking at that are cheap (I don't have too much money):

    CoolerMaster HYPER-TX INTEL-775 $49
    CoolerMaster X-DREAM INTEL P7750 $29.

Any others are welcome as suggestions.

Actually I saw a good fan recently on newegg. Let me check real fast--

I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that this one was the one I was looking at. $29.99-- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835185125

Well that seems to be ok if I had an AMD based system. But thanks for the info anyway.

Oops, sorry, skipped the description on newegg and missed the bit about AMD only-- try this.

    Same company, but an Intel-compatible.
