Actually, no. Pascal is coming back. A lot of programming teachers want it bought in as a teaching language, like BASIC. Due to its more C-style syntax, it can be very easy to switch to C, C++, Java (or any other C-style syntax language) after it.
So basically, they're digging up its corpse, removing the rotting flesh and giving it a makeover... good idea? I'm not sure.

Neither am I. It's old, and makes heavy use of inelegant functions like the beloved GOTO, apart from that I don't know exactly what kind of architecture it uses to compile it's programs.. bah nothing I'm going to use again, I suspect.

Nowdays, it's not one of those languages that you'd use for anything more than the learning process. Anything that's a mixture between BASIC and C is a good place to start, as you can go either way from there (VB or C++, then onto Java, Delphi, PHP, whatever - even something that's a wierd mixture of everything, like Python). It's one of those building blocks that (ususally alongside other basic languages) you can start to get a real grasp of programming.

I taught myself how to write spegetti code with QBasic. Then I took a class with pascal and the world opened before me. After that I took a visual basic and then a c++ class. I am very happy with having learned pascal first as it was wordy enough that I could grasp the concepts with ease. Once I had a working knowledge of how programming worked I was able to graduate into the more cryptic c++ (and to a lesser extend, visual basic.)

Pascal is a good learning tool

The programming language that I recommend to people new to programming is Python. It rules, has nearly everything that a fully-featured language has, and is easy to learn. It also encourages good structure and commenting style. There is also a lot of online documentation for new Python programmers, and people new to programming in general, in the form of free e-books.

(so pascal has still some use to me :>)

i had to learn python in uni and hated it (nearly as much as java)

in school we learned to code some stupid translated version of basic alled logo.
(i remember to use qbasic instead and the whole class copying my homework which i did in biology. If something wasnt right the whole class had it wrong and i got a 4 in computer sience :/)

hmm i think i typed my first basic line about 20 years ago and im a pro coder /gfx /webdesigner since 8 years. I also worked on the translation of windows me into german and was tech consultant on the win 2k whitepapers.
normaly i dont do much coding except web stuff. Im more the gfx & admin guy but if you dont find someone doing it for you youve to code it yourself.

Yes, but Goto is not used unless 100% needed, as it creates spaghetti code. Which is why ASM can be annoying to read, with all those JMPs and all.

Gosub is only used in BASIC, and was replaced by Call in VB.
The difference between gosub and goto is that goto jumps to a line of code within a subroutine and gosub jumps to a specified subroutine. Goto isn't nice, because it makes code less compartmentalized. It is much better in terms of readability and execution, as spaghetti code (created by goto) can cause unwanted behaviour if used too much.

I got my first encounter with programming languages when i was 6. It was Qbasic (maybe this is your anwser VITAS). It didn't involve serious coding. It were only commands like cout and cin in C++ (don't know the exect commands anymore). After that I didn't try to code anything till I was 14 (the age i'm right now). And i'm still learning. I'm trying to make an IRC client with VB right now (yay, it connected yesterday for the first time).
