Just read that Uplink/Onlink will never be "Online"..... Why? Couldnt it have been fun if there were special servers you could connect to and "hack" ? Or a different idea... Possible of getting to play it against others via LAN ? Just a thought =) Can`t wait til Onlink is 100 % complete |

Because it's hard to do and you need a brain to do it. Uplink was not written for compatibility with multiplayer in mind. Well, it wasn't written very well at all to be honest (sorry Chris...) I'm pretty much a beginner at C++ (I know enough to make some basic Uplink mods), and I can tell that it'd be pretty hard to develop a system whereby Uplink/Onlink would work as multiplayer, even at the LAN-only level. Yes, it would be fun, but it'd require hours and hours of hard effort from many people with lots of experience to get it to work. Uplink would basically have to be totally re-written... not that that'd be a bad thing to do, because if someone with a ton of C++ game programming experience re-wrote Uplink completely to the same design spec (i.e it does exactly the same thing as Uplink but it's coded differently), there'd be a lot less bugs. But it won't happen, so it's useless to talk about it. |
