| Post subject: | Which OS is best for Onlink? |
Tried searching the forums, but only got tons of isolated posts rather than a dedicated thread, so thought I'd start a new thread. Haven't waded through all 500+ threads already extant though, so apologies if this is already a thread topic somewhere else! A (hopefully) simple question - which OS and/or computer make and setup provides the most stable and least 'buggy' Onlink? I'm not asking which OS and platform is better OVERALL (I don't want to start a war here), just which has the least 'annoyance factor' with Onlink. To kick off, I'm running WinXP on a home build with a Quad-Core Intel processor, and am having issues with savefiles, VSECs, crashing on exit, keymappings, and assorted other smaller niggles that mean I haven't yet reached the Uplink Story missions without the game crashing or glitching on me at least once. However, reading some posters' posts, it seems that there are people who have taken their sessions well beyond the Uplink storyline missions without anything apparently going wrong. So is Apple outperforming, or is LINUX proving a stable base for the game? Should I drop the quad-core and go back to an earlier chip? And/or should I give Microsoft another chance, but move to Win 7 for the solution to my woes, or should I downgrade to Win 3.1 (okay, now I'm just being silly)? Thoughts? Anecdotes? 'well-I've-never-had-any-problems-with-this'es? |

Thanks for this thread. I have exactly same question. Are savegame issues only Win XP problem or moving to Win 7/or another OS can't resolve it at all? |

I can just post my experiences... I havent been to onlink very deep, in fact i just finished only one (new) story mission. But i used to play on Win XP which´s biggest problem is epic savetime. Then i bought laptop and i must say that everything works smoothly. So my PC is dual-core Acer with windows 7, and those are my experiences: 1)Savetime is really short (my autosave is off anyways) 2)VSEC 1 and 2 works fine (did not get to 3 yet) 3)No crashes when exitting the game About other problems: 1)Keymappings are not saved, but i think this is problem of Onlink, not our computers and so it doesnt work for anyone yet (or it does already?) 2)Viewing busted profiles will crash the game... i dont know if its posted somewhere but i just couldnt view cut-off agents from main game screen on win XP, neither on windows 7. I could say that going from win XP to 7 could solve many problems. But beware, there is HUGE difference between win xp and windows vista/7 and you *could* get totally annoyed of it at start. (Oh yes i am talking about security) |

Works fine on my iMac... ...although it does have a tendency to quit after 10 minutes. |

i suppose, get ~8gb of ram, 2 ghz P4 or better, and run the 64-bit and you should be fine. |

I highly doubt you would need 8gb of RAM to run Onlink. |

Maybe not, but 4 gb+4 gb virtual sure aint enough. although it does let you play a while before crashing from failed malloc exception

Just a small correction: My computer is somewhat new, but in Windows 7, HUD-IRC makes my game crash too. Now even sooner than before. I cant even connect to IRC because it crashes as soon as i buy the upgrade most of the time. |
