Might be a confusing subject, but i got a few questions.

On the uplink test machine, there is a couple of .cpp files, and a sample lib, and some sample program.

I remember reading ages ago that you could be able to "compile" the programs if you find the source, however i'm unable to find any program that lets me compile the source files.

Is the whole "programming" idea dead and the files are just left-overs, or is the function not implemented yet? Or am i just stupid? :P

I don't remember for sure, but I don't think that feature's been implemented yet.

Or maybe it was and the software you need to utilize those files can be purchased from the Uplink Lab system.

the compiler has never been finished and is therefore unavailable. That makes the stuff on the test machine useless.

Right now the files are there for collectors only. Mind you, all of this will be obsolete now with Project Cerberus

To be more helpful, exactly what Cerberus will entail and how it will differ/be similar to Onlink hasn't been explicitly spelled out.
However, it involves rewriting basically everything from scratch, effectively making it its own game, and the hints that have been dropped seem to show that its scope will be much, much broader than Onlink's could ever hope to be.

This. There were basically two options here. Recode the game logic and use Up/Onlink's difficult-to-manage code or start over and have code that's readable, manageable and doesn't run in immediate mode.
