Just wondering Miah or Tycho if ya'll might want to put in a fire sale type mission into this re-coding of our beloved game. I have mentioned the terrorist potential a number of times. Not sure if you would/can put this much detail into a game, oir even if you would want to. But as someone that has been playing Uplink/onlink for just shy of a decade, i would like to see something new, or at least genuinely creative? Thanks guys for all of your hard work. No one can do it better.

PS; I am in the process of learning C#/C++/java. Was wondering if either of you or anyone else on this site would know of any good beginner guides to coding. I have the 4 dummies book on c and c++ and im not really finding them helpful. Not really sure where to start but i figured a good basic knowledge of how coding works would be the best course of action. However, I can't seem to locate a good source. Any suggestions/comments/concerns/tips from you or anyone else on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

You know what's a good idea? Learning C before learning any of those three. Turns out that C#, C++, and Java all have roots in C.

/me is totally not parroting his CS120 professor, what?

Well, I knew about the C# and C++ had roots in C (well, that's kind of obvious in fact), but never really had noticed the simmilarities between C and Java. I do think C and Actionscript look a lot like each other, though (which makes sense, seeing as Java and Actionscript are similar :classy: )

Well, C started it all. Then C++ came along. After that, Java and javascript, which inspired actionscript and most other scripting languages. Then C# was microsoft's version of java.

...is just a shitty way to write your compiler's IR (LLVM bitcode/GIMPLE), which is just a shitty way to write ASM, is just a shitty way to write machine code. "Shitty" here meaning "higher-level."

Except in the case of Java, where it does mean "shitty."

Oh you guys !

But no one really answered the question for learning material. So is there any you would suggest that this poor guy should try out before burning that "for dummies" crap?

Well, some of them might be good for starters. Depending on the topic. I found the once about Networking and security to be to full of prejudices, bias, half-truth ...

Don't know about programming books but the o'reilly are usually fine to begin with.
Some good ones in German. Just skip through amazon on the subject, go to the nearest library or book store and test read the lot. You realise on the first few pages whether a book is profound and thorough and manages to well explain (easy to follow and understand).

Personally I would recommend starting with a scripting language and then working up to a programming language. Try something like PHP or perl or python or something whose rules are a little more lenient. There's plenty of online documentation and tutorials for those languages. This way you learn the basic structures of programming like loops and variables and things like that, and then you can go to a language like C++.

That's just my 2 cents and most people would probably disagree.

If you're just starting I'd say go with Python. Differentiating between a scripting language and a programming language is silly - how it's run, interpreted or otherwise, is a function of an implementation of the language. If it's Turing-complete then, AFAIC, it's a programming language.
