has anyone made a collection of gateways for Onlink? (those i tried from Modlink.net fucked up when i installed them... i suspect it is because of the RAM slots..) it would be awesome if someone had made some Onlink Gateways.. i really want a OMEGA Parallel Supercomputer with an extra security slot (and perhaps some more memory).. |

I would, because I need the practice. I'm just not sure of Onlink's gateway handling anymore. I tried and failed to install a gateway that was mentioned (as working) elsewhere on this forum. |

well too make a gateway atleast on a mac you just show the contents of onlink.app contents->Resources->change data.dat to data.rar un-rar->data->graphics->gateways.txt at least it should work but then again I've never tried it I just look at the contents one day and since the other things from uplink like graphics.dat were zip I un-ziped data.dat and found data.cgnz (archive utility's thing saying it is a rar file) and then changed it to rar and un-rar'd it. and found all the gateways etc. but never actually rar'd it back up again though and tried to see if it would work. |

Back in 0.1.2F I got my own custom gateway to work with only one bug (namely, the image for the gateway wouldn't load/display, so every time I came across a screen that necessitated the displaying of the custom gateway, Onlink would minimize and I'd get an error message - a minor bug, as I could just hit "Okay" and go back to playing). Haven't tried custom gateways for 0.2.x. If the process for adding custom gateways to 0.2.x is the same as 0.1.2F, then here's how to proceed. Make sure that your custom gateway has similar entries as "regular" gateways. This includes, but isn't limited to, a maxRAM value and possibly also a maxUpg value (like I said, I haven't tried custom gateways for 0.2.x, so I dunno what else is needed). -- Griffinhart |

Hmm, thanks. Was hoping, by now, it would be as simple as "Drop a ZIP with your def and 2 images in the Onlink root folder and the game will figure it out". |

According to a post by Tycho (I can't find it right now), that's exactly what you're supposed to be able to do in 0.2.x - drop in your gateway files to your usr folder and go play Onlink. Dunno if this feature works or not. -- Griffinhart ETA: Here is the relevant post. Tycho still hasn't posted those instructions, though. Maybe I should bug him about it. |

Please do. Also see if you can't get them to do anything about the horrendous def file format? This is really where XML comes into its own... |

can't really see the use of extra gateways now that multiple gateways are possible, in fact imo they end up fucking the game strategy - if you have an omega set as the CPU power, all you gotta do is fill it with nanodrive CPU's and frozen hell all of them. Installing a custom gateway with more CPU slots is just a way of getting the same power with cheaper CPU's... |

So wait. You're saying that there's no point in allowing the players to add their own customized gateways, purely because the mechanical benefit can be imitated by abusing a different game mechanic? ... -- Griffinhart |

I think the ability to customise gateways should be integral to the game, really. Someone released a simple gateway builder tool when Uplink 1.3 came out, and there's no reason that same functionality can't be included in-game. Elsewhere on the forum I pointed out that gateway pricing should be automatically calculated based on components in the gateway. If that's the case, then the player can design a custom gateway, paying for it as he upgrades. I know, for instance, I'd love the ability to dynamically add memory slots as I need them, CPU slots as I need them, and modem slots as I need them. And maybe pay ever-increasing monthly maintenance fees, too (which is just as sensible). sentinel: You made no sense, I'm afraid. |

That's been in the game since at least 0.1.2F, if my memory serves me correctly.-- Griffinhart |

Well then, all we still need is a gateway editor, and we're set. |

I admit the way I put things didn't make much sense, I love the idea of being able to customize gameplay. Let me put this another way then:In order to prevent exploiting, I can think of two different paths: 1) Instead of gateway prices being set, they vary depending on how many slots the gateway has (this would rise at an exponencial rate, thus making gateways with, let's say, 1000 CPU slots unbuyable). 2) Instead of players being able to externally adding gateways, there would be an ingame gateway editor (maybe a buyable upgrade?), and like in option 1, prices would be calculated by the game. As I see it, this could allow us to keep making those awesome gateways, but without this turning into a way to exploit the game! |
