Hi Miah, or who ever programmed that trace thing.

I got caught. Again. And I don't understand how this could be and how to avoid it in the future.

I got my Gateway with two Security-sets: wireless and a motiontetector (I don't really know, why I bought the detector, without a explosive it's kind of useless. Maybe I thought I would be alarmed anyways if someone got near, just to know)

Anyway, I connect usually like this:
    Gateway - Auxiliary Gateway No 10 - InterNIC - Auxiliary 11 - some route throughs - Auxiliary No 12 - some route troughs - Auxiliary No 13 - ... - Auxiliary No 16 - TARGET

After every started trace, visits to Uplink, heavy systems, LANs (latest after 3 connects) and occasionally in between, I delete the logs on InterNIC.

Now I thought, I cleaned my path pretty good and wanted to read the news on Uplink server. SWUSH ... an email! I get worried, when e-mails pop up unawaited!
This one said, that my Gateways Wireless connection was seized by federal agents but they found no evidence on the crimes I didn't do. "a verry lucky blow, if you ask us", said Uplink-corp.
Well, I thought so too, wondering how the heck they got through to my Gateway in the first place.
Paranoia strikes and so I went off to clear all logs on my Auxiliaries and on InterNIC again, leaving them virginly blank behind with only the latest log of my cleaning action logons.
I than tried to put security to my Auxiliaries like explosives and wireless would be a good idea, but that's not possible.
Than I tried to figuere how to improve the security at least on the Gateway and noticed, my wireless was gone. Propably taken by the damn federal agents, I thought.
So I went and baught two upgrade wireless from Uplink again (to replace the empty spot and the useless motion detector).
I turned fast foreward on to skipp the 24h and BANG!!!

    Got caught and jailed.

    WHY the heck WHY?!?

Shouldn't they not only be unable to access my Auxiliaries that I route through to read the route path? And didn't I clear my path thoroughly?
I don't know how more paranoid to be.

I really hate copying my last savegame from over a vew weeks over and over again, when I don't understand how this could be at all.
Steals the fund of the game!

Is there any reason you routed from Gateway to Internic and then to Aux's? Surely Internic should be the very last bounce point after anything you own, that way you clear the logs on Internic and there's absolutely no trace to you.

Edit. You say you clear the logs after every trace that starts. Active trace (When your trace tracker starts bleeping at you) and passive are totally separate and unconnected. Even if you break into a server and there's no active trace, there may still be a passive trace. Clear your tracks after EVERYTHING illegal. Even if I route all the way to a server, connect, and don't try and break in, I still go delete my logs.

    Better safe than sorry.

Edit 2. "Auxiliary No 16 - TARGET" If you bounce through a gateway of your directly before the target you're asking for trouble because even if you delete the logs on that aux, there will still be connection logs on the Target server. And if you connect to the Target server to delete them, you will leave disconnect logs. They probably found your main gateway because the Aux is registered to you.

Onlink Pros correct me if i'm wrong but this I believe is the best connection:

Primary Gateway (File Server) > Aux Gateway (Staging Server (No idea what this does as of now)) > Aux Gateway (Power Server) > Internic (For log clearance) > Servers you have admin on (Longer trace times) > As many servers as you need to get more time in Target > Any special servers you need to bounce through to access Target (PA to get to CMF) > Target

Then go clear logs at Internic and all should be well, assuming you're not doing bank missions.

I don't go from my Gateway directly to InterNIC. I go to my first AUX first, thann to InterNIC and than to several other AUXes with route throughs on several systems in between. My last rout through is an AUX again and I then jump on my target.
I did that, becaus I thought, that they wouildn't be able to connect to my AUXes to read the logs. Or it at least takes them longer (hopefully).

I usually do. Sometimes, if it's a verry weak system and there is no trace and I feel safe, I do onother connection and maybe a third one and go erase the logs after that. I'm not waiting for a long time to pass before erasing my path, so it should by whiped before any track reaches InterNIC.
Especially with that last one I did, I erased all my last suspicous footprints from InterNIC
and went on te Uplink newsticker. I then received that email.
Does it take them some long time after they nailed you down to sent agents and finally arest you? That would explain at least, that they must have nailed me somewhat earlier before I whiped my path clean.

WHAT!? They link the AUXes back because there is a registration on me? I never knew that. Could this be true or is that a guess?
Then I wonder, why the didn't nail me aerlier. Because that last AUX has been sitting there for ages and I usually verry seldomly whipe them clean. It's the first system to check on a passive trace so they must have had me a long time ago and didn't do anything about it?
It'S not, that I just started the game. I'm doing pro-jobs. Topranked Uplink-agent. All the best equipment worth millions that I "earned" hacking several bank accounts transfering some hughe savings over and beeing safe afterwards. That wasn't just yesterday.

I'll trie that one, just to make sure if it works better.
By the way: what do you mean with Aux staging server and power server?
I think I have everywhere the same AUX server with a fast Modem connection to not slow me down and some room on it in case to store data on it (if I ever decide to).

This doesn't work, because A) They can connect and read logs on Aux's (As far as i'm aware) and B) If they couldn't, you'd never need Internic. You'd route through an Aux and the trace would always stop there.

Passive trace times are all over the shop. Sometimes you might get caught (ingame) weeks later. This is why you must clean your tracks. And polish them.

Yes, thats why I still clean my traces with TraceDeleter v4 on InterNIC.
I find it somehow suspicious though, that all the crimes lead to InterNIC and the trace looses the path there, yet still the only logons to InterNIC are from me. But then again, this is just a game and in the reall world, there would be hundreds of legal logs where there is no telling, which one is the evil one.

Another thing: if the catching takes sometimes weeks from the point of discovery, there is no telling, which run went wrong. This could be a recent one were I slipped or one from the beginning. Hell, I think I just need to start all over freshly.
This lets you loose the fun. If I have to restart all over from the beginning, I might as well wait till the next release is finally out.

I think you're missing the point here. If you go from your main Gateway to Internic, then to your Aux Gateways, there is still going to be a trail from the target server to a Gateway owned by you. Make sure all your Gateways are in the bounced connection before Internic and you'll be fine.

Especially if you're using your final bounce point before a Target as an Aux.

Obviously it's not feasible to have random logs on Internic, but regardless, if the trail stops at Internic, even with your connection and disconnection logs on there, there's no evidence that you routed your connection through it.

Backup your user file (If you don't know how, simply go into the Onlink folder, go into the User folder, and copy and paste the user file with your agent name on it to somewhere else like your desktop) and then run the game. When ingame, press super fast forward and leave it for a bit. If you don't get caught, you know that file is clean, so exit the game and copy and paste your backup user file into the onlink user folder, so when you next run the game it'll start from where you were before.

I never own aux gateways. Wasting money i should say. Just upgrade your main gateway (preferably custom made), then have a bounce like this: gateway>internic>servers all over the world (usually all servers listed on internic)>target. After doing lalala lilili on the target, go to internic and delete the routing log (leave the connection established log intact).

And if you ask me, i made myself to TERMINAL rank 1 agent (easiest way by hacking several bank account) and haven't been caught. Never have a scratch on my wireless router even.

Several things. In this release, Aux's are useful to an extent. Want massive CPU power, but nowhere to store your stuff? Buy an Aux file server.

Now, go to http://www.onlink-mod.net/ and check out the production blog. Check out the Gateway management system. You can't run stuff stored on Aux's, but you can use their CPU power. So, looks like the Trinity's out. The OMEGA will be the new Primary for it's uber storage space, and the AMCORE will be an awesome Aux for it's 16 CPU slots. Meaning what? Well, from my understanding, you're gonna be able to store and run all your tasty programs because they'll be stored on your primary with it's massive 256gq memory, and still fully utilise the awesome power of 16 CPU's with the Aux. But we'll just have to wait and see how it pans out.

Yep, that's pretty much right. Avoiding capture in Up/Onlink is the first and most basic thing there is to learn. After you discover Internic, the only time you may get caught is if you get major careless, or screw up bank robbing. That's why, again on the production blog, Miah talks about a new security system, the Savant Cypher. One we'll probably have to figure out rather than run a program (I've spoken to him a bit, and I think he's looking forward to the new security system. He's a sadist; he wants to see us suffer) I foresee a future for these boards whereby they're bombarded by posts for help, myself included.

    yep, thanks for the help.

I figured already myself to try the last safe I had from after the bank hack to run on superfast for some months just to be sure. It's safe. Well, that was my first run to stag my cash account up and before I bought all that fine equipment. So I didn't have the Auxes then.
Auxes were new to me. I didn't know that they were registered to you and leave a direct link towards your person. Well knowing that, I will buy only three Auxes and put only one in my link, just for the fun of it and not to leave that generall 127.0.0.1 (as if it would matter what IP you leave if it's still related directly to you ... ;) ).

I still don't get the logic behind why they would nail me if they find one of my Auxes. Even if I own it and they know that, it was just used to route through. Anybody could have routed through it. Argueing that way, every company, bank or payphone holder in the game must have been held responsible and jailed when routed through.

Miah's making it so you can't route through PCs or Phones I think ;)

Nope, i don't need aux, not with a custom gateway with 100 CPU slots and 200 memory slots.

Well, it IS a "private" computer...

Not many people would be routing connections through a privately owned, ip-not-just-freely-available-on-the-internet computer.
