It depends on your processor, what processor do you have? If you aren't sure, then stick with x86. |

It's all based on the processoer you have. If you dunno which one your processor is most compatible with, simply go with x86. (I think SSE2 is for Pentium CoreDuo, and SSE is for earlier Pentiums, but don't quote me on that. If you've got an AMD processor, like me, x86 is the choice for you.) -- Griffinhart |

x86 works on any Intel or AMD processor. SSE works on the Intel Pentium III and all later Intel processors. SSE2 works on the Intel Pentium M (and Pentium 4, simultaneously) and all later Intel processors. |

Thank You, I believe my processor is an AMD (since it has the AMD sticker on it |

Really? I have an AMD and it runs SSE2 fine. |

Athlon XP has SSE Athlon 64 scoket 754 has SSE2 Athlon 64 socket 939 with a Venice core or later has SSE3 Anything AM2 has SSE3 |

Okay, thanks then. I can run even SSE3, yay. For some reason I feel really cruddy all of a sudden... Maybe I should get my homework done. I had a snowday today, and we are getting some snow showers later tonight and early tomorrow morning (like, before 5am). Hopefully, they'll close school again. |

Fortunately, most of the performance difference between x86 and the SSE/SSE2/SSE3 builds will not be noticeable. The advantage of the SSE and above code is that they use newer x86 instructions (stuff that was introduced after the first Pentium). For instance, Pentium III processors will hugely benefit by having cmov* instructions instead of a series of jumps in a conditional expression. It eliminates branch misprediction possibility and partial register stalls. But yeah. I'd say you'd see a difference between x86 and SSE, but on modern processors, not much. I mainly built the SSE* builds because some older processors suffer from some annoying bugs (like the aforementioned partial register stall) and these can be completely averted by using such builds. |
