Post subject:  Component vs Hierarchy System

I've been getting serious about game development, and right now am trying to decide on whether I should used a hierarchy system for entities, such as having an Entity class and then having child classes inherit that one, or a component system, which I'm guessing is having an object class capable of being extended with components.

See here if I failed at explaining.

Anyone have experience with either? Is there a performance difference between the two? Should I just go with the one easier to implement?
