Short and sweet. I love my G1 and the Android platform. The only thing that bugs me, is the speed. For instance, compare the speed/responsiveness of an iPhone to that of a Nexus One/G1. I notice that my G1's UI is much "laggier" than the iPhone's. While I haven't actually tried a Nexus One yet, I assume it's similar (Strike that, I just asked some guys in #cyanogenmod, and they say the N1 beats the crap out of the G1 [and a few even say it beats the iPhone] in terms of speed and responsiveness, which is understandable because the N1's hardware is amazing).

With this in mind, do you think that Android is limited by it's Java base, or is that an irrelevant factor on embedded devices?

Also, I want educated (preferably in-depth) responses, simply saying "derr, Java is slow," isn't good enough.

Nah, see, one of Java's design goals was to actually be a cross-platform language for things like mobile devices, so it's actually fine there, especially since mobile devices aren't usually that fast anyway.

So my G1 really is that slow?

The way I see it, until I upgrade hardware or Google gets their butt in gear and develops a proper JIT for Dalvik, Android is always going to seem slow to me.

I know, shame on me. Wait, do you have either of the two?

Nope, Nokia N97. Want an HTC Desire or EVO 4G so bad, though. Too bad neither T-Mobile US (which I'm currently under, sort of) or Verizon (which I prefer) are picking up either phone. :<

You can get shot in the #cyanogenmod channel if you say the N word.

Anyways, why on earth would you ever prefer Verizon over T-Mobile?

Because for one, Verizon has an actual 3G network.

T-Mobile recently began expanding their 3G coverage (which would have been particularly nice during out trip to Arkansas last Summer). Also, contrary to AT&T's commercials, it is T-Mobile that has the fastest network.

All the speed in the world doesn't help if there's no coverage.

Incidentally, I rescind my desire for an EVO 4G. That thing is an ungodly massive brick (and Motorola's Droid X is even bigger... it borders on xbox hueg). D:

Motorola sucks, and Sprint sucks. Period. I'm disappointed in HTC for making such a beast, you should only bump the screen size up if the resolution scales with it.

EDIT: Wow, this is my 1000th post. Whoo.

Got an HTC Desire, that thing be speedy! Compared to the old HTC smartphones with WM 6(.1), this thing reaches warpspeed! Only downside is I gotta charge it each night, but who cares.. _WARPSPEED_ !

dude, Java isn't slow.

Most JVM are slow that's correct. But google is doing great with their dalvik implementation.

Just get a better phone.
