I dunno, creating a program to encode a given text file and then later decode another given text file (using a cipher of our choice) doesn't seem very tutorial-level.

At least, at the time I did it it didn't seem like it. Shit was hard, son.

unless you wrote a secure cipher yourself, it shouldn't be too hard. Been there done that, I even wrote a cipher (a few simple XORs, not really secure in anyway, but the file looked pretty scrambled)
Code:
open file open temp until EOF file read stuff from file encode stuff write encoded stuff to temp close file close temp delete file rename temp to file

Yeah, that bit's easy. It's the enciphering/deciphering bit that was slightly more difficult.

I think C++ as a first language is alright. You learn the basics and then you can later discover that there's more to it.

Also, you don't have to know it all at once to learn the language (nor is the case with any language), so pointing out the complexities of a language, unless the complexities are inherent in the most basic components, is irrelevant.

I found learning PHP - a much higher level language - first much nicer. Then dig yourself into C++ and C. Then code Objective-C and you will never want to write a line of anything else again.

Good, then I'm on the right track. ;)

Is Objective-C really all that great? Explain please. :P

The only programming language worth learning is Inform.
