1. Option to use click to focus OR hover to focus. I'm actually a huge fan of the hover to focus as it can save me precious time, but a lot of people seem to prefer click to focus.

2. Copy and paste. 'Nuff said.

3. Hyperlinks in mission text. I should be able to directly click on an ip address or phone number to dial it directly or add it to my list. I should be able to click on a bank account number to have it automatically enter it into the login screen. I should be able to run IP Probe directly on an IP address.

4. A more unified interface. Not including programs, currently some windows have a "Close" button, some have an "[X]" button.

5. (More) draggable windows. More movable, and resizable windows, like the new "Detach"ed notepad feature. It would be nice to (for example) have the mission description AND the security analysis windows open at the same time.

6. Version numbers on software. Put version numbers on the software in the file server and console listings, like we have in the memory banks.

7. Actual scrollbars in the LAN interface. This way I don't miss a lock because it was indicated offscreen farther than I thought the LAN went.

I have another idea.

Drag Scrolling
In the LAN or other places you hold the left mouse button down on areas were there is nothing important and drag the mouse. This causes the window to scroll relative to the amount dragged by the mouse.

@ Zerofire:
your idea could also extend to some sort of mouse guestures. In some ereas you might be able to left-click, hold and pull to move the large screen (worldmap or LAN), where in other places this option is turned off, because there is no use for it. Right click would open a modifiable menu, in that you could put and select the most used programs for easier access. Maybe you could also put the most used bypassers in a sort of window/subroutine that you can pull in that drop-down menu. Starting the subroutine would try to start all the bypassers in there after each other. It could also contain a detection with which it would start the bypass if necessary, if it doesn't find such a device on the targetted server, it just scips that bypass and checks the next ...
Drawing a circel with middlemous-button pushed could open the voicerecorder or else ...

Customisation: You could arrange your folders and tools yourselfe. Include or remove substructures(folders) in the programms area. Move programms from one folder to another (e.g. i add a "bypass and hack" folder, dragging my bypassers in it and the voiceprint player and the cracker.

I would love if the game had more the look and feel of a modern Unix like OS. With transparency, cool animated effects, glossy, bubbly bonbon styles. Maybe some useless gimics just for looks (like some useless or unreadable infos, just symbols appering maybe circular user around objects, sort of like circular menus. Sort of like in the movies. e.g. James Bond Quantum of solace
http://www.benarent.co.uk/bog/wp-conten ... erface.jpg
http://www.benarent.co.uk/bog/wp-conten ... erface.jpg
Or remeber the augmented reality infos displayed in the hud of Iron Man movie?

Or the Animes. Stylish sort of hud-information. They don't have to mean anything.
http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/images/GITS-SS07.jpg
http://www.cydonian.com/photos/data/med ... VD_008.jpg
You know, what I meen, where you have a picture and than some line are drawn from a tiny object pulling an enlarged shot in some small frame, displaying some unreadable extra information and parameters, some circular symbols rotating to adjust or focus, scrolling text in popping open pull down menues appearing and disappering again ....
Some of this could actually be even real like this line drawing with a small frame for extra info on the world map for instance, if you click on an addresse or so. Others could just be small barely noticable gimmics in the backround with no use except looks)

The rest maybe sort of like compiz-effects, OsX-Aqua or Windows Aero. Just to make it look more futuristic and stylish.

Get the idea?

Mor style, mor futurism. Not so dull and blank. Get mor animated excitement in there.

BUT BEWARE!!!not to overdo and cramp the screen full of it. It could leed to disorientation and confusion also if too much.
Descrete. Most of it should just be descrete in the backround.

The shemes could also be customisable. If someone perferes the windows 3.11 look, so be it. Or why would the windows be always square. One corner could be cut off just for futuristc looks, they could be blueish or greenish and i could adjsut the transparency. I could turn the above meantioned backround animations on and of or even adjsut the amount in an visuel effects bar (for gimmics) under settings ...

-------
PS: I love the idea of you guys going open source with onlink. Hopefully it will lead to many great ideas and solution and a rush in development, taking workload of you shoulders

PPS: remember to update onlink, when multi-touch and 3D-vision managed to be a standard

Actually using the middle mouse button for anything is highly unrecommended. A decent amount of mouses do not have a middle button. If they do most have it hidden as a scroll wheel. I personally don't want to be accidentally scrolling when I try to press the middle mouse button. Also my laptop has the middle mouse button assigned to do magnification so if I press it in game it would just make a box where everything is magnified. That would be a pain.

I actually like the _option_ of using the middle mouse button for something. Most mice at least have a scroll wheel, which can act as the third mouse button. For an instance of the MMB being used well, take a look at Blender.

In general you can't really hold Blender up as an example of good interface design, but its middle mouse rotation is pretty great.
Just make sure that there's another way to do whatever the middle button does, like holding down the option key while clicking or whatever.

Tycho if you want to use the middle mouse for something then use it for a scroll wheel only. I don't want to accidentally press it and get a blurry rectangle.

well, the use of the middle mouse as a button would be an option, not a must. Controlls should be customisable. So if you've got issues with the middle mouse, you could set it to e.g. left + right mouse button pushed together or so. Or Shift + left mouse or you could put it on any of your keybords keys or you could never think about it again and not use the function at all...

All in the name of freedom.

I didn't get him as well. Just that he doesn't like to use middle-mouse.

Back to graphics-ideas:
-you could go for a very futuristic stylish animated look, stylish in the sense of hightech cyberlike (like in TRON or so)

-or you could go more for a cute comic gaming style, which would accomodate the fact, that it's just a game (for now :wink at Miah:).
As an example i like the ubuntuusers site very much. Unfortunately it's a German community and it's all in German. But you could just click through to get the idea. Especially the icons. I like them, but also the bonbon style frames and top-menu is fitting.

have a look: http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Startseite

Or see OpenOffice:
http://contributing.openoffice.org/
http://de.openoffice.org/

Or the new Debian 5.0:
http://www.debian.org/
http://www.heise.de/bilder/132534/0/1
http://img7.myimg.de/debian5kdef0ea4.png

FreeBSD (compiz like)
http://h3g3m0n.files.wordpress.com/2008 ... enshot.jpg

But i'd still like some sort of transition to the futur aspect of the game.
Letzt have it look a bit more like that UNIX? system of Iron-Man movie (scene in the office where Obadiah Stane's private hard-drive is searched by Pepper Potts) or the control-system in Matrix 3 where the tower controls the gates and the docking of the ships or Minority Report or Final Fantasy.

Herm. As long as there's another way to do what the middle-mouse button does, then that's all the devs can do about it. You could still "accidentally press" your middle-mouse button and get "a blurry rectangle", whether or not there's actually any action bound to the button. It doesn't matter what the game does with that button if you have a system-wide macro on it. Just don't "accidentally" press it, and use the other button/method that does what the middle mouse button does. That's all.

Get it? Even if they were to listen to you and not use the middle-mouse button, you could still just as well "accidentally press it", and you'd still end up with the same result. The only difference is that there would also be an in-game effect, which in the case of an accidental button press is about similar to accidentally pressing an F-key bound to "Self-Destruct Gateway". It's your fault, not the game's. Just be careful and it won't happen.

EDIT: This is aimed towards zerofire mostly - I'm aware that Switch was merely pointing at the information and not necessarily stating his own thoughts.

I have multiple computers and some of them actually do have a middle button without the effect. I use the same gaming profile for each copy of a game (Laptop with Uplink and Desktop with Uplink use same profile). Each profile stores information on key assignments. If I switch from one system to another I use the same key layout therefore if I use the middle mouse button on my desktop I will be using the middle mouse button on the laptop as well. Also the effect is not a macro since I did not apply it. It is standard with my IBM Thinkpad T23.

I think it should just be possible to bind any control to any key or button. With my new keyboard I can set a macro so that one keypress activates all my bypasses :D

Well, not sure if someone has mentioned this. I noticed elements of this mentioned but, can we make the whole thing more Windows-ish. Put the clock in the bottom right corner, or make it in a widget. Instead of a connection analyser, we can have a conection widget. Instead of having to re click a tool, when you pull it up in widget form IT STAYS THERE. That would be cool cuase then you can have the mission tool the conection anylyser and various other tools docked on the right, left, bottom, or top of the screen. we could move the map, the cpu usage tool, all of it. or how about an actual form of multi player. OH and for gods sake can we get a color changer. the overall design is great. But, i want to change the theme color from blue to black, or pink, or whatever. I run onlink in 1200x800 and at times my screen still feels small (given its a laptop) but still. Thats just my 2 cents

EDIT:
I just remebered, yall could give it a backtrack 4 feel. just a thought
