What are gateways?

When you register as an agent at Uplink Corporation, they will assign you a Gateway computer. A Gateway is simply a computer connected to the Internet that you have access to. The Gateway will hold all the software and hardware you will need as an Uplink agent, and can be accessed from anywhere in the world, ensuring total anonymity.

When you route through your Gateway (from your local computer), no records are kept, and anybody attempting to trace you will only get as far as your Gateway. However - to protect it's interests - Uplink will be forced to disavow all knowledge of your actions, and destroy your Gateway. You will also lose your account at Uplink.

There is a security system that will allow you to self-destruct your Gateway intentionally. You can hire a new Gateway from Uplink, and all the evidence pointing to your activities will be eradicated along with the old Gateway.

It is essential to keep your Gateway constantly updated with the latest Software and hardware, in order to cope with the missions, security systems and files at higher levels.

Auxiliary Gateways

As of Onlink 0.1.2, auxiliary gateways can be used as personal fileservers, and connections can be bounced through them. They do not replace your primary gateway if it is destroyed.

Future versions of Onlink will expand the capabilities of Auxiliary Gateways.

Use of auxiliary gateways

First of all, it is highly recommended to have HUD_AdministrationPanel before buying auxiliary gateway as it allows you to switch control between gateways easily (for example acces their memory bank) When you buy auxiliary gateway, you will receive message from uplink about succes and it includes link to the new gateway. Then you can switch control to the new gateway and buy desired hardware (if any). Now the gateway can be used in two ways: 1) your own fileserver to keep data in. You can copy your programs there as backup that you wont need to buy them again. Or you can switch to its memory bank to do some (copy database) mission and after finish you can switch back to your regular gateway which includes more programs. Auxiliary gateway can not be accessed from outside the uplink! 2)You can buy some cheap gateway with motion sensor and gateway nuke and use it for safe bouncepoint. With admin panel you switch to its security systems and when you see that things are bad, you will nuke the cheap gateways, loosing almost nothing. Possibly you could use the wireless router for safety, but i did not try it yet.

Upgrades

All upgrades will take place about 24 hours after ordering.
